Windows 8.1 bought some of the more common folders to the top of the “This PC” window. Having used Windows since its inception, we find this looks odd and sought to fix it.
Oh no, remnants of Windows XP, can't be a good signal.
Thanks for the registry trick, it will be a moment to apply it with the REG file each time I'll have to install one of those Windows 8.1.
This tweak is something I figured out how to do a bit ago.On June 29th I sent it to The Geek but it seems he didn't get around to writing about it.It seems Taylor Gibb also figured this tweak about and did put out an article. There is one part missing though. On 64-bit systems you need to delete those keys from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace too so that 32-bit programs don't show those folders either (in save/open dialogs for example).
Is it possible to replace those folders with libraries instead?
No, I tried swapping the Known Folder ID the "This PC" folders to the IDs for the libraries in the registry but it did not work.
Do you by any chance also have the keys to get them back for 64bit. Much appreciated, thanks.
You can use the registry files at https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ceephyncvznjoka/kqTZtOMpM1Use "ThisPC Folders - Add.reg" and "ThisPC Folders - Add (WOW64).reg" to restore the This PC folders in Windows 8.1 64-bit.Use "ThisPC Folders - Remove.reg" and "ThisPC Folders - Remove (WOW64).reg" to remove the This PC folders in Windows 8.1 64-bit.
More details on the registry keys, in my reply at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1_pr-files/how-do-i-get-rid-of-the-clutter-under-this-pc-in/937131d0-8cd0-42ac-ab44-026426aa84ea
I really can't recall, but wasn't this crap removed in Windows 7; the same OS that everyone loved.((if so))Why bring back stuff we didn't ask for.((if not))Why not give us the option...it's clearly not hard. This reg hack proves it.
I'm VERY thankful for someone showing me how to get rid of those misplaced folders. I'm thinking the reason why Microsoft placed them there was that there's many people using them. I myself can't imagine one reason to do so. I would have very hard to live with those folder, always making searching and saving more difficult, I have ten disks so I need Everything to be as Clean and simple as possible in explorer. Thanks again.
I'm also very thankful to You showing how to COMPLETELY get rid of those extremely annoying folders. Now they are gone even when saving from a 32-bit program. Thanks!!!!
Thank you so very much indeed! I too have lots of drives and it annoyed me to no end when they are lumped together like that. I thought I'd just have to live with it after an unsuccessful attempt to get rid of them a few months ago...
Any chance of separating the hard drives from other removable media?
EDIT: I did some more looking around and behold!! Someone made a one-click tool to get rid of both those folders as well as other tweaks, including separating the hard drives from other removable media!!http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/170375-oldnewexplorer-make-your-81-explorer-work-like-win78-one/
I won't mind the folders being in "This Computer" if I could control the display order and shift folders to the bottom.
Any chance anyone has figured out a mod to control that?
