This one actually makes a lot of sense; this character had an arc that spanned the entire series, and the actor had to base his actions not on the current script, but on the character's entire life story. The actor would need to know the character's whole history so that the actor could react appropriately in any situation - possibly differently than the audience would expect, based on their knowledge.
I love it when this kind of thing is done in a story, when the actors and director foreshadow later events, but in such subtle ways that you might not quite get it the first time around.
I'm not sure if it's because I really like Harry Potter, but I can just hear Daniel Radcliffe's voice: "So you knew! You knew it would happen all along!"
