Now you might be looking at that title and thinking “What?!”, but consider what might happen if a super villain managed to stick a giant ‘space straw’ capable of reaching space into an ocean? Do you think the vacuum of space combined with the pressure of our atmosphere would allow the water to reach space or not? Vsauce discusses the question and more in this terrific video about our atmosphere.

Okay, so the atmospheric pressure at sea level is only strong enough to allow water to be sucked up 10 meters. But what if we put the end of the straw deep into the ocean where the pressure is much greater? would it be great enough to push water into space, allowing the villain to steal all the water to a certain depth?
