Currently, every natural mechanism I know for creating this is organic.

All that is needed to create it is hydrocarbons, oxygen, high heat, and high pressure. Hydrocarbons, such as methane and oxygen are fairly plentiful in space. The high heat and pressure can come from an exploding star or a collapsing gas cloud.
