You’re sitting at your PC and you receive a text message, so you pick up your phone, unlock it, read the message on the small screen, and type one back using the touchscreen keyboard. Why not use your PC instead?
Since 2010 I have been using PDAnet by June Fabrics while my Android phone (Droid Razr) is being charged/connected to my laptop and it works great.
If you're on AT&T, there's an AT&T Messages app that lets you text via an online interface as well. The problem I have with it is that I'm used to the stock HTC messaging app and don't want to switch to their (IMO ugly) app.
Is there anything like this available for Windows Phone 8?
I used Mighty Text for awhile, but it had syncing issues and just general weirdness. I switched to "SMS Text Messaging ↔Text on PC". Much more stable. The tablet app is paid (but you can just visit the site on your tablet).
Still waiting for Google Hangouts to take over SMS/MMS and unify it across devices!!!
Another good That's android only and Google chrome only is krome
It sends all your notifications to chromes rich notifications and you can reply to text messages too

Using a Samsung Galaxy S2 Android based phone.
I was surprised no one mentioned using plain old email. For years I've been texting the wife at @vtext.com.
A good list is at http://benchmarkreviews.com/3612/how-to-send-free-multimedia-sms-text-messages-from-email/
