In Windows 8.1 you now have the option of making the Start Screen use your Desktop wallpaper as a background. Here is how to enable it.

Alternatively, you can also do this from the charms bar when on the start screen. Tap the "Settings" charm, then "Personalize." The last pattern should be your desktop wallpaper; select this to make your start screen use your current desktop wallpaper for the background. You can also still select colors to be used on the Modern UI menus and logon screen.
Also, if you have your desktop is set to rotate through a series of wallpapers, the start screen will also rotate through the same set, in sync with your desktop.

Is it at all possible to do this in reverse?
If not: where are the Start backgrounds stored, and are they stored as each of the colour combinations?
I much prefer the simple 'bird and blossom' background that comes with 8.1 as opposed to anything that I've been able to find for the desktop, but I also like the unity that desktop syncing can provide.
