Am I missing something? It looks like the chopped cable was simply glued into the plug housing and never electrically connected. How can it work?

The cable doesn't work. The Flash drive is simply embedded in the cable and looks like an iPod adapter cable. I'm sure it works fine as a Flash drive, but it would be a terrible way to hide a secret; the first time someone plugs in their iPhone to charge, they're going to see your super sekretz filez....
