iPads and iPhones don’t have file systems you can see, but there are still apps and files eating up space. You can see exactly what’s consuming that limited space and free it up.

I went into the nearby Apple retail store as I have some pictures that I cannot erase on both my iPad and iPhone that came from an old and long dead computer. Their answer? "Deal with it." I would LOVE to know how to delete these but I cannot connect to the iTunes on a computer I no longer have. Something that helps me is that you can sort the apps by size which also is quite useful when deciding what to delete.

Is there a way to save your messages? You only mention deleting them.

You could try iFunbox. It allows you to access your iOS file system from a Windows PC without having to jailbreak the device.
