Is it necessary to keep your list of startup and running apps lean and mean on Android OS, and if so, how can you put the brakes on a application heavy startup?

On a non-Sense phone with over 256 MB RAM, you never need to do this. On a phone with Sense and/or with 256 MB or less RAM, gaming requires this and manual task-killing. (Maps, Subway Surfers likes to send push notifications, stuff like that).
