Like any piece of technology, iPads aren’t completely obvious when you first pick them up. They have their own language of gestures, swipes, and button presses you should learn to become more comfortable using them.
Irony... iPad is supposed to be easier to use than anything else... but none of these gestures are self-evident at all.
It wouldn't be a problem if there were alternatives for the important gestures, but as far as I know, there's no way to get to the task switcher, the notification panel, or Spotlight other than with these non-intuitive gestures.
