Another great option is using removing the universal binary files that have stuck around to allow support for the Power PC chipset. I have an older version of the Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection that ended up giving me back a gig or so worth of data.
CleanMyMac2 is a great for cleaning up those files and lots more.
